IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which One Do You Need?
Both versions test Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — but they are used for different purposes. Here is how to choose the right one.
Choosing the wrong IELTS version can cost you time and money. Both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training assess your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking skills and use the same 0–9 band scale, but they are designed for different purposes.
What is the same?
The Listening and Speaking sections are the same in both versions. Your overall band score is reported in the same way.
What is different?
- Reading: Academic uses longer texts of an academic nature; General Training uses texts you might meet in everyday life and at work.
- Writing Task 1: Academic asks you to describe visual information such as a chart, graph or process; General Training asks you to write a letter.
- Writing Task 2: Both versions ask for an essay, with topics suited to each purpose.
Which one should you take?
IELTS Academic is generally required for university admission and some professional registrations. IELTS General Training is usually used for work, training and migration purposes. Always confirm the required version with your institution, employer or the official visa guidance before booking.
